Family Program

Why family support matters

Recovery Includes the Family System

Addiction does not happen in isolation. Neither does recovery.

Families often enter treatment carrying fear, confusion, exhaustion, guilt, anger, and uncertainty about what comes next.

Fear + Reaction
Education, Support, Boundaries
Recovery-Focused Connection
Our goal is to help families move from coping on instinct toward healthier, sustainable connection.

Families should not navigate treatment alone

Early Outreach Begins the Relationship

The first call is more than an introduction. It begins a relationship with a family that may be overwhelmed, exhausted, frightened, or unsure of its role in recovery.

  • Primary counselor contacts family members within 72 hours of admission
  • Family Department follows within 7 days with support and program orientation
  • Explain available programming and weekly Family Zoom
  • Invite participation in Family Education Day
  • Create a point of contact for questions and concerns

Time with Loved Ones

The brain & addiction

Understanding Replaces Blame, Not Accountability

Brain education reduces blame and creates space for compassion, accountability, and recovery-focused support.

Addiction can affect:

  • Reward
  • Motivation
  • Memory
  • Stress
  • Decision-making
  • Self-control

Understanding PAWS

A Difficult Day is Not Recovery Failure

Education helps families respond to early recovery with steadiness rather than overreaction.

  • Mood changes
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Sleep disruption
  • Fatigue
  • Cravings
  • Difficulty concentrating

The family process

Addiction Changes the Family, Too

These patterns often began as survival strategies. The goal is not to blame the family—it is to help the family recover.

  • Denial
  • Preoccupation
  • Attempts to control
  • Increased tolerance
  • Guilt & shame
  • Isolation
  • Emotional unmanageability
  • Dishonesty

From enabling to supporting

Supporting Recovery is Different From Enabling

ENABLING
SUPPORTING

Making excuses

Naming the problem honestly
Taking over responsibilities
Allowing natural consequences
Paying for consequences of use
Supporting recovery-related needs
Repeated chances without limits
Calm, consistent expectations
Trying to control recovery
Allowing the individual to own recovery
Support says: “I love you, and your recovery belongs to you.”

Helping families find their role

Boundaries Become a Practiced Skill

Families do not just hear about boundaries—they practice creating them.

A boundary is not punishment, rejection, a threat, or control. It is a clear statement of what I will do to protect my wellbeing.

When you ________,
I feel / notice ________.
I need ________.
If this continues, I will ________.

Turning education into action

Treatment Ends. Recovery Continues at Home.

We are not only preparing the patient to discharge. We are helping prepare the environment they are returning to.

  • Remove substances from the home
  • Encourage aftercare
  • Communicate calmly
  • Allow natural consequences
  • Support predictable routines
  • Reduce unnecessary chaos and conflict
  • Maintain boundaries
  • Celebrate progress without expecting perfection

Resources, not just information

Families Leave With Tools They Can Reuse

  • Neurobiology + PAWS
  • Family symptoms + roles
  • Communication tools
  • Support resources
  • Boundary exercises
  • Supporting vs. enabling
  • Preparing the home
  • Reflection + next steps
